Robotic Knee Replacement

What Is Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery?

When the cartilage in your knee wears away due to arthritis, age, or injury bones start rubbing against each other. That is the pain.

In robotic knee replacement, the damaged part of the joint is removed and replaced with a precisely fitted implant, guided by a robotic arm that helps the surgeon work with accuracy that hands alone cannot always achieve. The result is a knee that moves more naturally, hurts less, and lasts longer.

Here Is Exactly How Robotic Knee Replacement Works.

Six simple steps. From scanning to standing up again.

Here Is Exactly How Robotic Knee Replacement Works.(1)

Your knee is scanned, and a 3D map of your specific joint is created — your surgery is planned around your anatomy, not a standard template.

Dr. Jay Patel reviews the 3D map and plans every detail — where to cut, how the implant sits, and how to protect healthy tissue.

During surgery, the robotic arm guides Dr. Patel’s movements with precision — staying within the plan at every step.

Only the damaged part of the knee is removed — carefully, accurately, and with minimal disruption to the rest of the joint.

The new implant is placed in the exact position planned for the best possible alignment and long-term comfort.

Recovery begins the same day — gentle movement starts within hours, supported by our in-house physiotherapy team.

Premium Implant: Bionik Gold Knee System

At Bapashri Hospital, we use the Bionik Gold Knee System as a premium orthopaedic implant designed for patients who want their knee to function as well as feel natural.

Engineered for precision fit, durability, and a full range of motion, it is one of the most advanced implants available in India today.

Your Knee Is Telling You Something. It May Be Time to Listen.

You do not need to tick every box. If even two or three of these feel familiar, a consultation can help you understand exactly what your options are.

  • Knee discomfort severe enough to disturb sleep is a sign the joint needs attention
  • Persistent swelling even after rest is a sign of ongoing joint inflammation and damage.
  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee, even after warming up.
  • When painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs are not providing long-term relief.
  • Walking even short distances has become painful or difficult.
  • A knee that buckles, locks, or feels unreliable is a serious sign of structural joint damage.

Questions Patients Ask Us

Questions Every Patient Asks Before Deciding on Knee Replacement

faqs
Is robotic knee replacement painful?

The surgery is performed under anaesthesia — you feel nothing during the procedure. Post-surgery discomfort is normal and is carefully managed with medication. Most patients describe the pain after surgery as significantly less than the chronic knee pain they had been living with for months or years.

The robotic knee replacement procedure itself typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes. Including preparation and recovery room time, you will be in the hospital for approximately 4 to 6 hours on surgery day.

Most patients take their first supported steps within 24 hours of surgery. By the time of discharge — typically 3 to 5 days — patients can walk short distances with a walker. Most patients walk independently within 4 to 6 weeks and climb stairs comfortably within 6 to 8 weeks.

With the Bionik Gold Knee System and proper post-operative care, most implants last 15 to 20 years or more. The precision placement achieved through robotic surgery helps the implant wear more evenly, which contributes to its longevity.

Yes. Many of our robotic knee replacement patients are in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s. Dr. Jay Patel evaluates each patient’s overall health carefully before recommending surgery, and our anaesthesia team is experienced in managing surgery for older patients safely and comfortably.

Most patients are discharged within 3 to 5 days after robotic knee replacement. Recovery continues at home with our in-house physiotherapy programme and 24/7 patient support — so you are never without guidance, even after you leave the hospital.

That is completely understandable — and you should never feel pressured. Dr. Jay Patel offers second opinion consultations where he reviews your reports, explains your options honestly, and helps you understand whether surgery is truly needed at this stage. Many patients come in unsure and leave with full clarity — in either direction.
